Impact testing of weld metal and HAZ for A 333 piping???

Impact testing of weld metal and HAZ for A 333 piping???

Impact testing of weld metal and HAZ for A 333 piping???

(OP)
We are currently looking at a B31.3 natural gas compression station project.

The designer has specified A-333 pipe and compatible fittings (A-420 Gr. WPL6), forgings (A-350 Gr. LF2), and castings (A-352 Gr. LCB). The system is designed with a min. temp. of -50 deg. F.

If I understand Table 323.2.2 Column A correctly, impact testing of the base material is not required (Table A-1 lists all of the above materials at -50 deg. F min. temp.) but impact testing of the weld metal and HAZ is??? If I'm reading the table correctly, only Notes (3) and (5) can exempt us from impact testing of weld metal and HAZ and I don't think that we meet the requirements of either of those notes.

We do not have the information needed to calculate the stress ratio as defined in Fig. 323.2.2B per Note (3) and I don't see how Note (5) exempts impact testing of the weld metal and HAZ in this situation either.

My plan is to qualify a new PQR and perform the necessary weld metal and HAZ impact tests at least at -50 deg. F - am I doing this unnecessarily or am I on the right track??? Power piping is my background - the impact testing is throwing me for a bit of a loop.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Impact testing of weld metal and HAZ for A 333 piping???

The A352 LCB base metal requires charpy impacts of 13 ft. lbs min at -50F/-46C. That information should be supplied on the material cert from the foundry. The LF2 also requires impact testing per the material specification (15ft lbs.at -50F). There is no way I would do anything other than impact test the new PQR at -50f for weld and HAZ.

Thanks for the input!
