power distribution in the USA?

(OP)
What is rated 1-phase and 3-phase power distribution (rms or peak-to-peak) in The USA? What are basic formulas for its calculastion or where to find them?

RE: power distribution in the USA?

Suggestion: IEEE Standards are reasonably followed. Visit
http://www.ieee.org
for
IEEE Std 141-1993 Electric Power Distribution for Industrial Plants.
ANSI C84.1-1989 includes voltage ranges.

RE: power distribution in the USA?

Voltages in common use in the U.S. are:

120/240 volt single phase
120/208 volt three phase
240 volt three phase with center-tap on one leg for 120/240 v
480/277 volt three phase 4-wire
480 volt three phase 3-wire
4160 volt three phase
6900 volt three phase

Check the standards already referenced for additional info.

RE: power distribution in the USA?

On the North-American continent, low-voltage four-wire systems are 208Y/120, 480Y/277, 600Y/346 and 240∆/120.  Three-wire systems are 240∆, 480∆ and 600∆.  Tightly regulated 60Hz is the norm.

One utility’s example of “Description Of Service” is: http://www.pge.com/customer_services/business/tariffs/doc/ER2.doc

Small encore: Reference:
1. IEEE Std 241-1990 IEEE Recommended Practice for Electric Power Systems in Commercial Buildings, (Gray Book)
