support for rooftop exhaust stacks

(OP)
Typically, when the roof stacks gets too high, we provide either guy wires or steel frames to laterally brace the stacks. However, the roof stacks can also be designed to be self supported (cantilever off the roof steel) when they are not too high.

Could anyone offer a rule of thumb for such height limit? say 10 feet, 15 feet?

Thanks.

RE: support for rooftop exhaust stacks

This is probably not the best forum for your question, as this forum tends to be devoted pretty much to the heat exchanger and thermo questions. Seeing that you're an experienced Eng-Tips user, you've probably have decided forum507: Structural engineering other technical topics is not the best place to post your question. You might try forum403: HVAC/R engineering. That deals more with the heating ductwork side of things and you may get an answer over there.
