construct datum target line and area in drafting

construct datum target line and area in drafting

(OP)
Hello,
Probably the simplest question but I'm new on NX.
I'm having hard time to construct datum target line (phantom lines) and area (section lines inside a phantom outline of the desired shape) in drafting. I don't find how to do it in Datum Target creation tool dialog. Can anyone show me how?

RE: construct datum target line and area in drafting

Do you have a picture of what you want it to look like?
It doesn't sound to me like you want a standard datum target, but I could be wrong.

What version of NX are you on ?

RE: construct datum target line and area in drafting

Hi,
Please find attached the image herewith.
I have tried to present both in a single image so let me know if it lacks clarity.
Just one question " do we keep the datum area outline as a phantom? As far as i know it used to be solid line only though the cross-hatch is there by all means".Do correct me if i am wrong please.
Best Regards

Thank you Kapil,

Is this the only way to create datum target areas and lines in drafting? I thought I could do it in "Datum Target" creation tool.

If you work to ASME, I believe it is phantom outline. ASME-Y14.5 defines it. Not sure about ISO.

RE: construct datum target line and area in drafting

Hi,
Thanks for correcting me.Yes i just noticed it is a phantom line in ASME-Y14.5.
I know PMI datum target has an option to create the DATUM AREA but i am not sure if it does it for DATUM LINE also.
I will look into it.

I don't quite like the idea to create datum target areas or lines by "Sketch" - if I move the view, the lines created from Sketch don't move accordingly. And I have to deal with the targets dimensioning.

jerry1423,
I just want a normal datum target area or line. By using datum target creation tool, I can only create datum target symbol, not the designated areas or lines. I'm using NX8. See attached.

RE: construct datum target line and area in drafting

Hi,
You can use PMI datum target (image attached herewith). This will enable you to define the area along with the symbol.
I am not sure about the Datum line though. Once you have the PMI then you can inherit it your drafting view.
And also let us know what NX version you are on (i work on NX8 and 8.5 and there is no such discrepancy like sketch not moving with the view ).I will send you a video shortly to corroborate the same.

RE: construct datum target line and area in drafting

have you tried sketching the datum pads, lines in your master model? Then you can make a drawing reference in the master model, and use that reference set in your drawing. This way when you move the view it moves with it.
