Rework/Repairs on welded joint

Rework/Repairs on welded joint

Rework/Repairs on welded joint

(OP)
Hello All,
Does anyone knows how many repairs/reworks allow in a welded joint?
assume the material is normal carbon steel (A 572) and welding process is GMAW or FCAW.
these are structural components and abide to CSA W59.03

Thanks in advance.

RE: Rework/Repairs on welded joint

The design code or standard should be the governing document for weld repairs, and if simulated post weld heat treatment cycles are required. If the design code does not address the number of repairs, I would suggest based on the materials you stated above have a combined PWHT time cycle simulating a total of three repair cycles, and evaluate mechanical properties.

Thanks for you response. There is nothing stated in CSA code about number of repair cycles. Considering amount defects we seen in these welds can we limit number of repairs for 2 cycles? I think random check of mechanical properties would be sufficent? Please reply

RE: Rework/Repairs on welded joint

x 3 repair cycles is commonly specified for the low alloy steels and 9Cr grades. But I don't think in your case there is a formal limitation. It is good practice to try and remove as much of the old weld metal and HAZ if repaired multiple times. It depends on the reason for defects forming. We commonly evaluate welds by doing some hardness checks to determine material condition.

Thanks a lot
