Synchrocheck Relay

Synchrocheck Relay

Synchrocheck Relay

(OP)
Greetings

We have 13.8kV Ring Main Units (2 Ring C.Bs and 2 Tee-off C.Bs)feeding 13.8/0.48kV Transformers which feeds LV Switchgear with 2 incomers and a Bus-Tie configuration.

Since the incoming source for both the LV incomers is same (same RMU feeding both LV Incomers), so will there be any condition under which I will need a synchrocheck relay?

Thanks

RE: Synchrocheck Relay

Is there generation at the customer level.

No

RE: Synchrocheck Relay

Sinc-check is mainly used to protect rotating machines, so no machines, no sync-check needed.

RE: Synchrocheck Relay

I would be concerned the first time that it was paralleled, checking wiring, transformer taps, and phasing. I have seen instances where the primary of a transformer was connected up ABC (H-1,2,3) and the other transformer was connected up CBA (H-1,2,3) resulting in a 60 degree phase shift. Once it has been checked and commissioned then no sync check should be required except after a wiring change on the system upstream of the breakers.

RE: Synchrocheck Relay

The only way sync-check will catch reverse rotation is if it is applied three phase. I don't know of anyone who does this.
I agree there should be a phasing process when it is first energized, event if you have three phase sync-check.

The problem with sync-check is if it is wired in reverse it will only allow you to close out of phase.

The proposed sync-check will be applied only for two phases.

RE: Synchrocheck Relay

It depends. The sync check would be to detect connection errors during and after maintenance work. If the circuits are all contained in a small area within sight of each other you probably don't need it.
