Incorrect Deformed Shape SAP2000 v12

Incorrect Deformed Shape SAP2000 v12

(OP)
I am a student working on a Master's in Civil/Structural. My project is to design a river bridge with a team of other students. Myself and one other group member elected to design the main span of the bridge which is a 3 span composite hybrid steel plate girder.

For the analysis we are using SAP2000 but don't have the BrIM Module to stream line the design process, we are using SAP only for the structural analysis model. I have worked with SAP before but only for a semester and the model we developed was much simpler. We are using a beam line analysis and simple frame elements in SAP to complete the analysis.

I have developed a model, input the correct section properties for each of the different cross-sections of the bridge, and included the applicable load cases and load combinations. The model will run and output moment and shear envelopes, as well as, a deformed shape. The moment and shear envelopes appear to be correct with the geometry and boundary conditions of the model but the deformed shape does not behave in an expected way. I have meshed the frame elements and joints together to ensure continuity in the model.

I have also include an attached to a zipped folder including the SAP model and all necessary extra files.

Can a more experienced engineer offer any guidance as to what the problem might be with the deformed shape?

If you need more information about the model please let me know.

RE: Incorrect Deformed Shape SAP2000 v12

Hi.

Just took a quick look at your model and it seems you need to further divide your frame elements to get a better deformed shape. Try to use the Assign->Frame->Automatic frame mesh command. Furthermore, when presenting the deformed shape, don't forget to check the "cubic curve" option box or you'll just get straight lines between nodes.

Hope it helped.

avscorreia is right, use a denser mesh for the analysis using above commands.
