ASTM pipe materials

ASTM pipe materials

(OP)
Hi, friends. There are many pipes marked for TP 304 and TP 304L simultaneously nowadays in Brasil. This is not correct. Which is the tolerance for carbon quantity (under and over) for pipe according ASTM A312 TP 304 in comparision with ASTM A 312 TP 304L to separate them?

RE: ASTM pipe materials

Luiz,
TP 304 0.08% max
TP 304L 0.035 max

Hope that helps,
Regards,
Kiwi

RE: ASTM pipe materials

While I am not sure of the marking requirements of this specific standard, it would just seem that e.g if a pipe lot had consistently lower than 0.035% carbon, it is conceivable the pipe might meet all requirements for both "Types". If it meets both types in all respects, why couldn't they be so marked (that doesn't mean you might not want to ask the vendor about this to make sure there is no mistake, or even for chemistries).

RE: ASTM pipe materials

Luiz,
As RConnor has stated if it complies with all the requirements of both it can be dual certified - no problem,
Cheers,
Kiwi

RE: ASTM pipe materials

Luiz,
Dual certification has become standard mill practice world wide. There is no minimum carbon content requirement only a maximum defined; also only minimum tensile properties defined - again no maximum limits. It is no longer more expensive for mills to produce the low carbon grades.
