Specifying a conveyor motor

Specifying a conveyor motor

Specifying a conveyor motor

Could someone recommend a primer in order to help me answer the following question. My background is analog circuit design for data acquisition and embedded programming.

I need to specify a motor to operate a conveyor. Torque and ratings are TBD However this is known:
-the motor is enclosed in closed-loop feedback system with a tachometer on the conveyor and drive electronics for accurate speed control.
-the belt must be operate forward and reverse to accomodate floor plan limitations
-positioning is not important, only steady-state speed.
-input ac voltage to drive electronics is 120-240 47-63 Hz
-drive electronics have CE mark for safety and EMI
-it is desireable to stick to a family of drives that talk with modbus.
-its a small conveyor moving 75 lbs horizontally for about 10 feet
-it is desireable to have the lowest EMI in order to pass radiated and conducted emissions
-cost is less important than passing conducted and radiated EMI

Is there a good primer which will discuss the pros/cons of the different kind of AC and DC motors along with controllers? Im deluged with salesmen who are only making the process more confusing, and seem to steer me away from technical application notes.

Thanks, that last link looks especially useful with a complete text book on motors!

Heres a paper for those more interested in specifying torque. An important point in this paper is that starting torque is not so much different than running torque with elastic belts because belt stretch limits the amount of rotary "stiction" presented to the motor at any time.
