Fire Water Pump UCP Power Requirements..

Fire Water Pump UCP Power Requirements..

(OP)
Dear All,

I was wondering if anybody could help me with a question about Fire Water Pumps and particularly with the UCP.

I would like to know, how are the UCP powered on a Fire Water Pump package?. There are 2 diesel driven Pump and one E.Motor driven.

I am after the power requirement for the UCP to operate. How could I know this?.

I looked to what the Vendor has offered but all I can see is Volts and Amps... and no KW requirements.

Thank you very much,

Any help would be appreciated.

Graduate Mechanical,

What's a UCP? Is this a homework problem?

UCP = Unit Control Panel

I have been asked by someone at work but I am not quite sure.

Thanks,

Graduate Mech.

RE: Fire Water Pump UCP Power Requirements..

A fire pump does not have a UCP. A listed fire pump requires a listed fire pump controller. The electrical power arrangement is specified in NFPA 20 and if the fire pump is located in a high rise building, it requires a second source of emergency power. The pump and pump controller wiring practicies are found in Article 695 of the National Electrical Code.

The required voltage and amperage are based on the pump's rated capacity in GPM and PSIG. The pump manufacturer will select the electric motor based on its required Brake Horsepower and listing to satisfy the pump's rated capacity. The required size and number of conductors to satisfy the pump's rated capacity is specified by the pump manufacturer.

RE: Fire Water Pump UCP Power Requirements..

The diesel control panels typically pull about 14 Amps at 115V. As stookeyfpe noted, the electric fire pumps are depended upon your HP and voltage. Also don't forget about the diesel block heater circuits that vary slightly based upon the size/model of engine. If you are doing a complete skid/house then you will have a variety of demands from louvers, fans, lights, etc.

As a distributor of fire pump houses/skids, one of the key items not adequately coordinated are the electrical requirements in accordance with NEC article 695 and the correct voltage.
