In rating an installed SV for increased throughput the installed ASME area has been quoted by the vendor as 361mm (G). The standard API equivalent is 325mm.


I have calculated an area based on API methodology and assumed K for the valve. I get 350mm.

The question is: should I conclude that the valve is adequately sized? In other words can I use the API method to assess an ASME installed area? Or:
Is there another (ASME?) equation I should be using to determine required area (which presumably will tell met the valve requires > 350mm and as such may need replacing)?Where would I find the ASME equation if so...?

Get a copy of the vendor's program or catalogue. They will have the ASME areas and ASME coefficients as well as the API areas and API coefficients, you can not mix them, that is, you can't use the API area and the ASME coefficient.

Without ensuring your assumed K is at least equal to the manufacturer's value, I would not make the assumption the PSV is adequate.

Using the API area and the API Kd (from API standard 520) should give approximately the same capacity as the ASME area and the ASME certified K. Which assumed K did you use?
