Design References for Circular Foundations

Design References for Circular Foundations

(OP)
Can anyone point me in the direction of some good references for designing circular foundations. I am interested in learning the proper way to calculate bearing pressures due to overturning moments and detailing radial reinforcement. The foundations would be for use with things like water tanks, monopoles, etc. Thanks in advance...

RE: Design References for Circular Foundations

The best that I have come across is in the 2nd edition of "Foundation Engineering", by A.R. Jumikis. Around 1986.

Years ago when I was designing circular and rectangular multi-cell concrete tanks for water and wastewater treatment facilities, we had a couple books from PCA. They had tables upon tables of coefficents for moments, shears, and deflections for various radii and heights. These were for the walls and base slabs.

Here's a linky to the circular tank book. The rectangular tank book doesn't seem to be available.

Here's a brief article I came across some years; maybe it can be of some use. I've never designed a circular footing - I've done some square & rectangular ones with circular openings.

I was looking at Roark (6th Ed.), Chapter 10 covers circular plates but not a fully supported plate. Perhaps one of the cases could work. Chapter 13 covers bearing and shear but I didn't see anything that quite resembled a footing.

Both the API and AWWA have publications on foundation design...

Try the ACI 350

Before you doing anything creative, make sure the code likes the artwork you are trying to wow the world with.

Call up the grain tank engineering dept at GSI in Assumption, IL. I worked there 20 years ago and they did "pre-designed" foundation drawings for all their grain bins/tanks. Back then there were several engineers on staff who could help. Can't remember any of it now:(.

Looks like they still do! Ahhh, hopper tanks...
