We are thinking to do steel constructions with nx, we did in solidedge sofar. What are the best workflows for steel constructions in nx. Any help would be nice.

sorry new in NX

Hmm, nobody is doing steelworks in NX? Well in SE we have the frame tool, in nx I don't have such a tool without routeing, AFAIK. What is the best practice for steelworks/weldments in NX?
I tried a little bit with the 3d line tools - feels a bit circuitous ..., is there something like standard profiles?

Erwin

RE: steel construction in nx

Dear Erwin,

NX does not have something like a Frame Tool.
Best way is to use the ReUse function and create or modify the standard profiles available on the GTAC Website.
There you can download standard profiles, screws, bolts, nuts,...
You do need to have a webkey to enter this site.

Kind regards,

PS. what is your location of work?

RE: steel construction in nx

I am working on steel constructions in NX, but i am making special assemblies that can adapt to future needs. And depending of how you work in NX you can change all profiles with just a few expressions no matter how many elements you have.

RE: steel construction in nx

NX doesn't have a BIM application like Tekla and so, but I know that is born a joint-venture between Siemens PLM and a BIM company that produce BIM application software.
For detail you have to ask to your NX representative.

Thank you...

Using NX 8 and TC9.1

RE: steel construction in nx

Sorry John,
but the company that has started the joint-venture have in the software name 'steel'.
Do you know also the joint venture with OminCAD package ?

Thank you...

RE: steel construction in nx

Is this what you're thinking of:

http://www.sfmex.com/?p=525

If so, I don't know anything about this partnertship.

I found this item which references OmniCAD but it doesn't look like it's related to 'steel construction' tasks:

http://www.plm.automation.siemens.com/en_us/partne...

And again, I'm not familiar with this situation either.

RE: steel construction in nx

John,
what I know is :
NX, before the end of this year, will have OmniCAD feature completely integrated in NX.
This integration, I think will be as a plug-in, like Moldex 3D, added in NX 8.5.

The same for BIM software.
About the name of this BIM software, I only remember 'steel'.
I think it's a Italian company that develop BIM software.

Thank you...

thanks to all your reply,
first of I have a Mach Designer license, may limitting my work.
What I tested so far in nx::
1. Approach
creating the guideline with the 3d curves in modelling, to get the steel work skeleton,
using datums and profile sketches and sweep, building a context assemby for the single profiles volumes and wave the profile volumes into the single member of the assembly to get a stocklist
2. Approach
using the steel work profiles parts from the reuse lib and build the steel work skeleton with positioning constraints wave them on assembly level together to do the post welding actions.

problem for appr. 1 : input, stocklist and clarity
problem for appr. 2 : managing none regular path like bends or bended steel paths

to give you an idea what should be done some links to pictures found with google:

RE: steel construction in nx

For your 'bended parts' have you looked at the NX Sheet Metal module (it's included in your bundle)?

thank you John on reply,
bended parts, I'm thinking about bended / deformded standard pipe profiles
to standard pipe profiles under 90 degrees not on miter with a bend

RE: steel construction in nx

Sorry i can't add anything to this post... just wanted to say i've been wanting NX to have a feature like the mid ranger's for a long time. Was sorely disappointed that a high end application didn't have a similar feature. Any closer to getting this in John? :)

RE: steel construction in nx

Dear Erwin,

If you want to have a nice example how to handle bended parts.
Here's a link to an example that has been posted by Mr. Baker.
The function used is Global Shaping, and is what I think very usefull for your constructionwork:

thanks Pascal on reply,
I have no global shaping license....

RE: steel construction in nx

Hi Erwin,

In fact you do not need an Global Shaping license...
I do not have it either.

The trick is, to import the example made by Mr. Baker into you Section Profile, all your Geometry should be before the new imported Geometry (to be seen in Part Navigator).

Next step is to Edit the Global Shape and replace the old Profile with your Profile, and the "Bending" Surface with yours created.

Can you give it a try?

Kind regards,
Pascal

RE: steel construction in nx

Erwin and all,

To avoid any Legal dispuite.

Please only use this Tip to evaluate the Global Shaping function, this if it is usefull for your company, before purchasing a Bundle where Global Shaping is included.
