Belt tension in modal analysis

Belt tension in modal analysis

Belt tension in modal analysis

(OP)
Is it possible to consider the force due to belt tension in modal analysis??. I am supposed to simulate for modal analysis of a bracket that supports a pulley .A belt in an inclined direction is running over a pulley with specific tension.

RE: Belt tension in modal analysis

Linear Modal Analysis are function of mass and stiffness only.

Prestressing force will have no effect on modal analtysis.

The only thing you can do is to model the stiffness and masses of the belt with a truss element.

Not true. You can pre-tension the belt with the force you require in a static analysis and then use the static analysis results (i.e. the stiffened structure) to do a pre-stressed modal analysis. The procedure is called a "pre-stressed modal analysis" - make sure pstress is activated, and this will take account of the stiffened structure. Google "ansys prestressed modal analysis" for more info.

RE: Belt tension in modal analysis

I can assure PicoStruc that the prestress in a belt will affect its modal properties, and therefore the modes of the total system.

But he is correct in less strange cases, bolt prestress, for example, has no particular effect on a linear analysis.
