Mandrel piercing load calculation

Mandrel piercing load calculation

Mandrel piercing load calculation

(OP)
This is regarding manufacturing a seamless tubing using a pierce and extrusion press.

I am trying to figure out if a 500 ton piercer be able to pierce through a solid billet or a hole need to be drilled into the billet before extruding it into a seamless pipe.

From my understanding, I am just gonna need to multiply the 500 ton to the diameter of the mandrel to figure out the tensile sterngth. If this is higher than the yield strength of the tube material, it is safe to say that the piercer will pierce the billet.

But I am thinking, since it is "breaking the material", should I compare it to the ultimate tensile strength and not the yield strength.

If anybody can tell me how to figure out the pierce load and give me the formula..it will be great

RE: Mandrel piercing load calculation

"Diameter" of the mandrel?

What thickness billet and what material and what material temperature does the problem give?

I do not know the diameter of the mandrel.

The billet is 20" length and material is Beryllium Copper.

What would be the largest pierce hole for 500 ton piercer...

do u have the equation...
