"Pneumatic Cylinder" Pressure Vessel Design Codes with Locking Teeth

"Pneumatic Cylinder" Pressure Vessel Design Codes with Locking Teeth

(OP)
What design codes cover pneumatic actuators? What legal concerns are there if a design doesn't have an ASME BPVC stamp? See below details...

I am designing a custom quick locking pressure vessel that operates like a pneumatic cylinder - radial o-ring between upper half and lower half (not a face seal like autoclaves have, with a rotating collet having 10x load transfer teeth (each in the shape of the letter C). The teeth engage when the collet rotates 18deg. When pressurized, the "cylinder" grows in length by 1".

See the image attachment for a better idea:

This is for a custom R&D project. Pressure of 10atm, 23" ID, inside volume of 7ft3. I've designed the vessel to have 1/2" walls, made from A-516-Gr.70 steel. FEA and hand calculations show the minimum safety factor to be 5.

RE: "Pneumatic Cylinder" Pressure Vessel Design Codes with Locking Teeth

markdblissmn, ASME Sec VIII, Div 1 exempts components such as "pneumatic cylinders". But, based on your stated pressure and diameter, this vessel (if is so considered) would appear to fall under Sec VIII, Div 1.

You may need to check with your insurance carrier or the authority that regulates pressure vessels in your jurisdiction to find what is required.

Be warned, if you fall under Sec VIII, Div 1 there are specific rules governing quick acting closures.

Mike
