I’m trying to figure out how to interpret the variation of efficiency graphs (fig 4.13) in the attached document. As two foundation footings get closer and closer they act as one. The graphs in fig. 4.13 are used to determine the increased pressure that is exerted on the footing by the adjacent footing. If I have an x/B ratio = 1.667 and a phi = 35 degrees, how do I read zeta? As I read 1.667 off of the x-axis and follow it up the 35 degree curve and then go over to the y-axis, I hit the dashed line. My question is: Do I follow the dashed line down to the zeta of 2.0 or do I go directly across to read zeta ~ 2.5.

Zeta is read orthogonally just like everything else on a Cartesian graph. If it were always 2.0, the dashed line would be a constant, not varied like it shows.

If I got paid for every hour I worked, I'd be a wealthy man.
