Oh great - now we'll have another s

(OP)
Oh great - now we'll have another series of load combinations to consider in the codes - meteor sonic boom forces.
A roof collapsed during the sonic boom in Russia. A wee bit more than the snow load capacity apparently.

Article: Meteor over Russia

RE: Oh great - now we'll have another s

i know the article says "sonic boom", but maybe it's the pressure wave from the explosion ?

Must be a result of global warming.(LOL)

Not anything like the big alien rock that hit Siberia about 100+ years ago. - Huge hole in the ground (deep and over a mile across). All the trees laid down perpendicular to the center and many fires. You can still see the remnants of the disaster.

JAE:

Looks like the probably unreinforced brick wall failed from the blast overpressure, causing the roof to fail.

Makes me wonder if we will get more during the flyby of the asteroid today...

RE: Oh great - now we'll have another s

Can you imagine that in Manhattan (sp?)

RE: Oh great - now we'll have another s

dik, no I can't.

All those old brownstones are unreinforced masonry, and all those glass skyscrapers...

<<shudder>>

RE: Oh great - now we'll have another s

"Must be a result of global warming.(LOL)" - Actually, some idiot news reporter on CNN raised the same question earlier this week.

While we're at it, let's not forget the force effects from lightning strikes. Thanks for the reminder Mike.

RE: Oh great - now we'll have another s

4
Governing Load Cases:
1.2D + 1.0W + L + .5 (Lr or S or R) + A
or
.9D + 1.0W + A

A = Apocalypse Load
ASCE7-15 will include chapters 32-36 with this apocalypse loading criteria. I also heard that Live load will now need to include the weight of four horsemen.

I think it would be appropriate to design for Ultimate loads only in this case.

RE: Oh great - now we'll have another s

Al Gore did it!!

RE: Oh great - now we'll have another s

As long as this new load case is still allowed in allowable stress design then we are fine (unless it lands on us).

RE: Oh great - now we'll have another s

ASD lives on!

RE: Oh great - now we'll have another s

First there was Al Galore;

First there was the Norway Spiral;

Next there was the Sumatra Earthquake and Tsunami;

Then we had Fukashima;

Then the lightning struck the Vatican;

Now this.... flush

Who's What's Next? ...

I don't care either.
