I have just read ASME B31.3 for the second time and understand all other aspects of the standard, except calculating pipe size.

I can't find any section in the standard (B31.3) that deals with pipeline OD (or ID) calculations. The closest I can see is to determine the pipe thickness and work back from that to the pipe diameter.

Is this right? I can determine thickness, yield, coefficient, allowable stress...everything EXCEPT the most important - pipe size/diameter.

I appreciate any help. I will appreciate if someone can just tell me what section to look at more closely or what section has the sizing equation.

You didn't miss anything. What you are after is not covered by B31.

Need the supply and demand flowrates, the pipe cost, the cost of pump or compressor power, the distance between supply and delivery points. That'll get you to the first iteration.

Dear Berenger,

1-B31.3 is process piping code and you should not use of this code for pipeline calculations.
2- B31.3 does not cover line sizing(finding pipe diameter).
3- For line sizing you can use process software such as HYSYS or Pipenet.

Fluid properties and fluid flow determine the pipe sizing. The Code is used to determine the pipe thickness, not the diameter.

Sizing equations are process-driven. If you are looking for a tabulation of standard line sizes, the standard would be ASME / ANSI B36.10. A pretty good table is in Crane TP-410 / Crane TP-410M. Typically, you would establish the minimum inside diameter based on process (hydraulics) engineering constraints and then select the closest (rounding upwards) standard B36.10 line size. Then based on pressure and temperature you would calculate the required wall thickness.
