Casting steels and Irons
Casting steels and Irons
(OP)
Hey guys,
as per my understanding we cannot cast Stainless steel and machine it, correct?
So I am thinking of cast iron to use for part which has to bear some shear load... Can someone tell me Cast Iron types which have higher Yield strength?
and another question between SS 302 and SS 329 which has higher is compartable at high temperatures?
I got some info, it does not give me the material number for cast iron

Just a suggestion, don't you think you may get more feedback by posting your inquiry in Materials Engineers forums?

Not correct, it's done every day. Stainless is a bit trickier to machine than, say, grey iron, but it's pretty well understood these days, and can even be considered routine given the availability of carbide tooling and pressure feed coolants.

btrueblood, Sorry buddy I am not aware of Stainless steel machining, I think it is hell of a cost anyways Thank you

Ask your metal supplier for pricing on representative forms and quantities for your application, and ask your tooling supplier for help with the machining parameters you need to predict cycle times. The machining speeds are not a whole lot different from those for cast iron.
