Interior, non-load bearing cmu walls-Unbraced

Are there any rules of thumb for heights of unbraced/cantilever interior cmu walls? I have a 6" wall which is 12' high and unbraced at the top. #5@48" oc works for the wall using 5 psf interior lateral live load. But at the base, I think if I design the 2'-0" wide thickened slab for the moment from the wall, I should be good.

But if there are any rules of thumb which someone can share, it will be great for future projects.

Thanks.

RE: Interior, non-load bearing cmu walls-Unbraced

I don't know of any. If it were me, I would simply design as reinforced masonry using the greater of 5 psf or the seismic load.

Excel, its a low seismic area so 5 psf governs. I actually used 8 psf to be conservative.

0.4 *(Sds, Spectral Respnose Accelearation) * (Ie, Importance Factor) * (weight of the wall)

Minimum 10 percent of the wall weight.

ASCE7-10, 12.11.1

This is for structural walls and their anchorage. Yours apparently aren't structural, but you can't go wrong with this even if it seams conservative. Then make sure your steel and foundation supports the load for bending and overturning.
