SA336 F22 CL 1

SA336 F22 CL 1

SA336 F22 CL 1

(OP)
Hi,

I have just received a forging of SA-336 F22 CL 1 material with hardness limitations of 24-28 Rc. The mtr does not have any tensile or yield tests. Is this normal or is my AI going to eat me up over this? Also, the tempering temperature was 1100F while the specification (SA-336) states this material must be tempered at a minimum of 1250F. Do the hardness limitations negate this temperature, meaning it must be 1100F to meet the 24-28Rc?

Any information would be great.

You should have mechanical property data in the form of a material test report. You may only have a Certificate of Conformance from what I gather. For most code applications, this material could not be used in construction because of traceability. Also, review SA-788 because this is referenced in SA-336.

Please review below from SA-788

16. Certification
16.1 The manufacturer shall furnish to the purchaser
the number of copies of the material test report specified
in the ordering information (4.1.4). The following items
shall be reported:
16.1.1 Purchase order number,
16.1.2 Forging identification number,
16.1.3 Material specification number including the
designation and year date, as well as the appropriate class,
type, and grade,
16.1.4 Heat number and analysis,
16.1.5 Results of the required acceptance tests for
mechanical properties,
16.1.6 Results of any required nondestructive
examinations,
16.1.7 Final heat treatment cycle including austenitizing
and tempering temperatures and holding times and
cooling methods if required by the material specification
or 4.2.3,

This is an mtr, giving everything normally seen on an mtr except the tensile and yield strength blocks are left empty. When I asked the manufacturer about this, they stated that once hardness limitations are applied, this negates the need for tensile/yield tests. This does not make sense to me....how do I know the material received is strong enough? The mtr even states that only chemical properties are given due to Rockwell "c" requirements. I have reviewed both sa-336 and sa-788 and no-where do i see exceptions for hardness limitations. Comments please.........

RE: SA336 F22 CL 1

It does not make sense and would make me suspicious of this item being supplied. Hardness requirements would be agreed upon between the Purchaser and Supplier and would not replace the specification requirements for tensile testing.

RE: SA336 F22 CL 1

Why are you requiring hardness of 24 - 28 HRC? The required tensile strength for SA336 Grade 22 Class 1 is 60 - 85 ksi, which equates to approximate hardness of 69 - 88 HRB. Hardness is not a requirement nor is it a supplemental requirement you can call out for this material. The lower tempering temperature may have been required to increase the tensile strengh to meet your hardness requirement, which of course also negates this material meeting the requirements of SA336 Grade 22 Class 1.
