API 5L X60 Pipe at High Temperatures

API 5L X60 Pipe at High Temperatures

(OP)
Hi,

I have been looking at ASME B31.3. The tables for max allowable stress stop at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for API 5L X60. Does anyone know would happen to API 5L X60 piping if it was exposed to temparatures of 500-600 degrees Fahrenheit?

Thanks

RE: API 5L X60 Pipe at High Temperatures

Some reduction of tensile/yield strength will be incurred. Could be appreciable or not depending on manufacturing process.

RE: API 5L X60 Pipe at High Temperatures

Not sure what your medium is, which may make a difference. Some general stuff I know of which may help you further;
- ASME B31.3 F323.4
- API RP 571 (esp. para 4.2, para 4.4 too maybe)

RE: API 5L X60 Pipe at High Temperatures

Are you talking about very short-term overheating, a so-called 'excursion'?
X-grade pipe materials are intended for low temperature service. They experience temperatures far in excess of 600°F during welding, but that is very short-term. It comes down to Time AND Temperature.

However, you do not want to take it to a PWHT temperature range, since prolonged exposure causes embrittlement due to the spices added to these steels.
