115-24 kV Station VAR control

115-24 kV Station VAR control

(OP)
Hell Guys,

I am new to his website and do read great technical information.
I am designing a 115/24 kV station with three 115-24,60 MVA banks. One of my colleague tells me that he has installed Cap Bank at each low side 24 kV bus for VAR control. He used to formula as , 60 *0.28 =16.8, The reason is that we multiply Bank MVA with 0.28 as Bank power factor is 0.96 and 0.96^2+0.28^2=1, 16.8/2=8.4, that means on each bank low side bus add a step of 8.4 MVAR bank. My planning staff from transmission planning conducted a study and asked us to maintain a power factor of 0.99 on the low side. The power being drawn by the each transformer (60 MVA Bank) is 39.9+j9.5 from 115 kV side, showing a power factor of 0.97. By adding a cap bank of 8.4 MVAR we will not draw 9.5 MVAR from the transmission system.

Please provide your input that adding cap bank at the station can be put on VAR control they would measure the VARs coming from the 115 kV side and turn on to maitain station power factor to 0.99 or 1.0. I don't think the cap bank would help with Voltage control as LTS on the bank would do voltage control. The reason I am thinking is by adding cap bank we are helping the 115 kV side

Hope I am able to explain my self. I would appreciate your input
