ar400 tensile test ?

ar400 tensile test ?

ar400 tensile test ?

(OP)
we're planning to build a diffuser type box using AR 400 plate (1/4"), from my research we plan on using ER80s filler with perheat to 200 F and slow cool down. This box does not provide any structural support only used as a means to disperse material ,basically a duct system , AWS D1.1 requires 2 Tensile test , AR 400 has a yield of 140 ksi ,AWS requires a acceptable tensile test to meet the minimum yield of the base materials . if using ER 80s wire I can't see a tensile test reaching 140 ksi with the filler metal yield in the 80's. we want to use a low hydrogen filler . help

RE: ar400 tensile test ?

You are not dealing with a AWS D1.1 code approved base material. So, your options - note on the PQR that that an undermatching filler metal was used for the WPS qualification specific to the AR400 plate (which is not Code approved material). The acceptance of the tension test will be based on achieving the strength value of the undermatching filler metal in the weld coupon. If the tensile test results in failure within the weld metal below the tensile strength of the weld metal, the PQR fails.

Otherwise, your second option is to take exception to AWS D1.1 WPS qualification because AR400 plate material is not AWS D1.1 code approved.
