Hand Wheels Hammer Test and Torque Test

Hand Wheels Hammer Test and Torque Test

(OP)
Hello!
can anybody explain the meaning of this requirement for valves "VALVES SHALL MEET QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR HAND WHEELS HAMMER TEST AND TORQUE TEST AS SPECIFIED IN PAR. 6.4.9 AND 6.4.10 OF API RP 591"?

Thank you
Corrado

RE: Hand Wheels Hammer Test and Torque Test

Hi there!

Using google will bring you the following results, among others:
http://unitedvalve.com/2011/11/01/why-valve-qualif...
http://ballots.api.org/cre/scop/ballots/docs/591_R...

The actual challenge is as always to use the correct keywords in the search (here 'hand wheel hammer test torque api rp 591')

Please allow me to bring forward an advice given to me many years ago:

If you want to ask a more knowledgable engineer a question, be sure that you have first yourself searched for the answer in a best possible and thorough way. If you do not then find a complete answer or solution, present your results, try to suggest a way out and make your questions as precise and simple as possible.

This has helped me a lot.

Maybee someone else familiar with the test want to comment?

RE: Hand Wheels Hammer Test and Torque Test

The spec you have has a typo or is a bit out of date in the current RP591 it's paragraph 6.4.10 and 6.4.11. para 6.4.9 deals with magnetic particle examination of the valve castings, anyway

6.4.10: This test is taking a sampling of handwheels and literally smacking them with a hammer (3 lb or 10 lb depending on valve size) and reporting what damage if any that it caused.

6.4.11: This test involves taking the valve handwheel and applying 3 times the recommended torque to it and reporting damage. So it's the "what happens when Big Bubba uses a cheater bar on the valve" test
