Pressure vessel

Pressure vessel

Pressure vessel

(OP)
I'm designing a pressure vessel and both my resultant longitudinal stresses upwind and downwind are negative. I have checked my calculations and there is no error. My bending stress is very small which results in both values being negative. Is this Ok? And if it isn't ok, what can I do to obtain values of opposite signs?

RE: Pressure vessel

So the longitudinal compressive stress due to dead weight and any other imposed loadings are greater than the longitudinal stress due to pressure?

Regards,

Mike

RE: Pressure vessel

(OP)
bending stress 3.35 N/mm2
dead weight stress -5.95 N/mm2 compressive so negative
longitudinal stress 81 N/mm2

upwind condition= longitudinal stress+dead weight+ bending stress
= 81-5.95+3.35
=78.4 N/mm2

downwind condition= longitudinal stress+dead weight stress- bending stress
81-5.95-3.35
=71.7 N/mm2

They are both positive as my bending stress is small

Thank you for responding Mike.

RE: Pressure vessel

Carib1, I don't do tower work, so, grain of salt:

Per your second post, things look OK to me.

Mike

RE: Pressure vessel

The Pressure Vessel Handbook (Eugene Megyesy) can be a help to check all the load combinations for the calculation of a process column.
