How can AutoCadd R14 run faster on 4+MB files?

How can AutoCadd R14 run faster on 4+MB files?

How can AutoCadd R14 run faster on 4+MB files?

(OP)
I am using AutoCaddR14 with several large (4+MegaByte) files and it takes a long time to load these drawings.  Other than buying additional hardware to boost my memory, how can I load these drawings faster.  I also find that drawing takes alot of time in these large drawings and find it frustrating waiting for the computer to respond to typical drawing commands.  Any suggestions?

RE: How can AutoCadd R14 run faster on 4+MB files?

Since you have already eliminated the best ways to get large files to load faster (better hardware:  more RAM, faster processor), your choices are somewhat limited.  Here's what I'd suggest.

First, freeze layers that you don't need to see while working on the file.  For example, if the file is a topo map, freeze contours and spot elevations while working, and thaw them for plotting.  This can greatly speed up load and regen times.  You can use the Layer Manager commands in the AutoCAD bonus tools to save named layer configurations for plotting, etc.

You should consider using the xref command to reference the large file into a much smaller one for your work.  You don't say what kind of files you are working with or what work you are doing, but this can make a real difference as well.  Also, consider trimming and/or deleting entities from your file that you don't really need  Just be sure to save the original version, just in case.

Good luck.

You may want to take some steps to lighten the load in Windows - which will go a long ways towards better performance in Atuocad.

1) Set wallpaper (desktop) to none. This will free up a lot of GDI resource. Also set your screen saver to none. That's one less thing to Windows to worry about.

2) Set yuor resolution and color depth to a minimum acceptable level. 1024 x 768 with 256 colors is all Atuocad needs. Using true color or higher resolutions forces Windows to work much harder - delaying response in Autocad.

3) Disable real time virus checking when in Autocad.

4) Close all unnecessary applications (mail, etc) to free up system resources.

5) Make ure you have an adequate setting for virtual memory. It's best if you use a set min/max and locate it on a separate logical drive to minimize fragmentation.

6) Defrag your HD throoughly.

Hope this helps.....

try xclip to turn off large areas.

You may have already done this, but make sure and purge your drawing.  Choose the "all" option to get rid of all unused layers, blocks, linetypes and text styles.  This may help reduce the size of your file.

Also, turn your "viewres" down to a very low number.  I recommend setting it to 100.  This will reduce the amount of work your video card has to perform.
