(OP)
Hi to everybody,

I would like to know if it's normal to require a chroming process on 17-4 PH steel material.
We were asked to produce an hydraulic cylinder with a rod made from 17-4 PH steel with chroming.

If chroming on this steel can be done, is there any specification on how it should be done.

Thanks

RE: 17-4 PH steel with chroming treatment

Yes, it is common for certain applications to use 17-4 PH stainless steel that is subsequently electroplated with hard chromium. The Cr plating is only for wear resistance, not corrosion resistance. Typical industrial standards are ASTM B177 and ASTM B254. Aerospace standards include SAE AMS 2406 and SAE AMS 2438.

Watch out for hydrogen embrittlement. You should have a post plating bake-out performed at 400 deg F mnimum to ensure removal of nacent hydrogen.
