weld cracking

weld cracking

weld cracking

(OP)
Hello,

If full penetartion weld was done between stiffner and angle in structural components, will it is possible for weld being cracked after galvanizing? welders say there there is lots of heat transfered because of the thickness of the weld. WPS does not say to do partial weld.

The material is SA 572 gr. 50

Please send me your commentssmile

RE: weld cracking

Yes, it is possible but not probable. If a crack was discovered after galvanizing, perform an analysis of the fracture surface to determine if the surface is coated with zinc. I have seen numerous weld cracks in galvanized structural fabrications - most often they were not attributed to the hot dip galvanizing process.

RE: weld cracking

I would also agree it is highly unlikely that a crack would occur from the galvanizing process.

Thanks a lot for your comments. does the thickness of the weld play a role for weld-cracking after hot dip galvanizing?

RE: weld cracking

If you mean does the weld deposit thickness play a role in cracking from galavanizing? No.

Thanks

RE: weld cracking

If the material being joined is of low carbon steel (A572-Gr.50 to say a A36 or equivalent, its not likely that the zinc bath caused the cracking. Was the joint welded with matching filler metal like a 7018 or ER70S-3 or S6. Where is the weld crack located, centerline, toe, etc. Is the weld profile excessively concave. There are so many causes of weld cracks but, I would some more information to give a more accurate answer.

hope this helps,
