determining pipe penetration type

determining pipe penetration type

determining pipe penetration type

Hi Engineers,

I would like to know how we determine the pipe penetration type (between doubler and sleeve) on bulkhead penetration

when should we use doubler or sleeve? is there any factor such as pipe pressure or plate thickness that affect the determination? please somebody help.

many thanks,

penetration of pipe passing through plate bulkhead. how to determine the penetration type whether using doubler or sleeve, is there any particular requirement for both types? or it's just optional, so we can choose one of them for every penetration?

RE: determining pipe penetration type

Dear mr. Plague,

You got to give more details of the installation.
Our questions here:
Purpose, pressure, temperature, material?
Do You mean: making a branch on a plate?
No pipespecs over there?

Greetings

RE: determining pipe penetration type

How about some sketches of your choices here ?

In my understanding, a sleeved bulkhead penetration would allow leakage between compartments and may or may not be acceptable in some areas.

The type of piping penetration depends on the compartment requirements as well as the engineering requirements of the piping system ( most importantly, the piping system temperature)

Ok guys thanks for the answers,

this is for carbon steel pipe passing through watertight bulkhead.

based on factors such as temperature and pressure, how do we choose between doubler plate and sleeve for watertight penetration? I just want to know the comparison based on those factors for doubler plate and sleeve penetration

I'm confused by a design, let say 'bilge suction lines' 40 Bar, 35 degree C, ASTM B 36.10, there are some bilge suction lines passing through different compartments (penetrating watertight bulkhead), these lines go to bilge suction manifold. some of the lines penetrate watertight bulkhead using doubler plate while some others using sleeve. I have checked the watertight bulkhead, there is no limitation, all pipes have the same space (no stiffeners to avoid) it's just a wide space of the plate to penetrate, passing through the same compartments, but why it uses different pipe penetration (doubler and sleeve)?

many thanks,

I would think that the intention is to anchor the pipe to the bulkheads where those doubler plates have been used. Axial movement is possible through sleeves.

RE: determining pipe penetration type

BigInch,
plagueland says "this is for carbon steel pipe passing through watertight bulkhead"
If axial movement is possible between pipe and sleeve, as you suggest, then surely the bulkhead will not be watertight!!!

RE: determining pipe penetration type

DSB, it is surely possible to have a watertght connection with a sleeve,
Kind of bellow on the outside or o-ring.

RE: determining pipe penetration type

As long as the expected movement wouldn't separate the sleeve sealing compound, I think it's possible.
