Pile length to resist lateral loads

Pile length to resist lateral loads

Pile length to resist lateral loads

(OP)
Hello

I am trying to determine the required pile length to resist moment and horizontal loading.

I have all the required soil parameters (phi, cu, weight) however I am finding it difficult in to resolve the moment loading with the applied horizontal load (approx 10% of the moment load).

I have investigated the charts by Broms and the Brinch Hanson method. In the former method two charts are presented for short and long piles. Previously (when I only have horizontal loads) I have first calculated H/cuD^2 or H/KpD^2gamma for a given e/D then determined L on the short pile chart. Following this I use the second chart for long piles to calculate the required moment capacity of the pile. How would this work for combined loading?

Any help would be most appreciated.

PS I am not able to use numerical software (e.g LPile) and want to resist the urge to use spreadsheets found online (e.g LatPy)

RE: Pile length to resist lateral loads

Is this a deep pile or shallow? i.e. >5*dia ?

RE: Pile length to resist lateral loads

1.5 times the retained height however it would be more prudent to calculate the required pile reinforcement rather than pile depth.
