Weld Qualification Corrosion Test

Weld Qualification Corrosion Test

Weld Qualification Corrosion Test

(OP)
Dear All,
I have a 304SS corrosion resistance vessel. I am wondering if the vessel welds shall conduct a corrosion resistance qualification test. If so, what is the corrosion test instruction / standard? what are the acceptance criteria?
Thank you for your advise.
Best Regards,
Oil Sands

RE: Weld Qualification Corrosion Test

What degradation mechanism are you expecting in service? If you are the end user, and you are expecting stress corrosion cracking, try this:

http://www.npl.co.uk/publications/methodology-for-....

Again, if you are the end user, and you suspect that the fabrication process may have degraded the performance of the alloy, try ASTM A262.

RE: Weld Qualification Corrosion Test

In the past 40 years, I cannot recall any Owner/Engineer defining corrosion tests for welding procedures to be used on 304 SS -for rather obvious reasons. Generally speaking, if you need corrosion tests on 304, you have most probably selected the wrong alloy.

RE: Weld Qualification Corrosion Test

Stan - they will be quality control tests rather than selection tests. Corrosion testing for CRA welding procedure qualification is run of the mill in oil & gas. The OP just needs to define why the testing would be necessary, and what the service environment is.

RE: Weld Qualification Corrosion Test

Steve,
I've been involved in oil and gas for 40 years and developed some of the initial corrosion tests of welding procedures for duplex stainless steel imposed on projects in 1980 and have spelled out corrosion testing requirements for 316, 317L, 904L, etc and various nickel base alloys and weld overlays. I simply have not seen any similar requirements for 304 welding procedures and weld overlay procedures.

RE: Weld Qualification Corrosion Test

By the way, the above reference link is broken.

RE: Weld Qualification Corrosion Test

I think that site may want a registration. On the 'not found' page, type "corrosion testing of welds" in the 'search NPL' box. If successful, it will be the first result. I can't post it up because of copyright. It's a useful report, and for the OP, so is their earlier report, CMMT(A)130, 1999, Corrosion Testing Of Welds
