Something seasonal: what is the plural of Father Christmas
Something seasonal: what is the plural of Father Christmas
(OP)
Just heard someone in the office sayings Father Christmases. Then I thought, is that correct or should it be Fathers Christmas as in brothers in law? Neither sounded right. I have also heard Santa Clauses but that doesn't sound right either. I normally use Santas as a cop out.

RE: Something seasonal: what is the plural of Father Christmas
If the two word form a common noun, the plural goes with the noun, not the modifiers. Brothers-in-law. Act like the hyphens aren't there.

Sergeants Major
Sisters of Charity
Emo girls

All of the above have application in the singular as well.

I couldn't find any more legitimate references, but there are plenty for the plural of proper nouns in general.
Translate Father Christmas to its Western term: Santa Claus. Plural is Santa Clauses, which can be found in many references.

Santa Claus, being a European and (basically) a saint, he might want you to be more formal and correct in his terms of address.
RE: Something seasonal: what is the plural of Father Christmas
Similarly, if it was St Nicholas, it would be St Nicholases, which, I suppose translates to Santa Clauses.

I have no problem with that.

Thanks also for not pointing out that I typed respectably instead of respectully. I cringed at that since this is the grammar forum.

Father: vt
Christmas: n (proper)
or maybe
Father: adj
Christmas: n (proper)
It's not really that clear to start with, so trying to extend it into some plural form isn't going to be easy.
