How do I connect a W8x24 steel beam to a 8" dia column?

RE: Connection detail of steel beam to wood column

With plates and bolts.

BA...Can you be more specific when the beam will be attached on the side of the column?

RE: Connection detail of steel beam to wood column

I assumed the beam sat atop the column. If you have a different setup, provide a sketch.

BA

RE: Connection detail of steel beam to wood column

I might add, why are you doing this? Use a steel column.

BA....Wood column and wood beam are existing. This is part of an alteration.

RE: Connection detail of steel beam to wood column

In (1), use an end plate on the beam with bolt above and below the beam. If you need more bolts, use a curved end plate fitting around the column with bolts through column as required.

In (2), use an end plate on steel beam with bolts through wood beam.

BA

In (2), if necessary, bend plate over top of wood beam for bearing.

BA.....Thanks. With through bolts, they must be more than 8" long, right?

RE: Connection detail of steel beam to wood column

Right.

BA....Thanks again.
I'm going to do the followings:
So in 1), since the column is round, I will use a curved plate with bolts at above & below beam. Size of bolts and plate to be determined based on beam reaction.
AND in 2) Welded plate to steel beam with bolts on each side beam. Wood beam supports floor, so not necessary to bend plate.
Am I correct?

RE: Connection detail of steel beam to wood column

Sounds like a plan to me. Steel and wood are like tinkertoys. Just use your imagination.

Mike...Thanks.

RE: Connection detail of steel beam to wood column

I like using wooden columns esp in house with wood walls.

That way - and usually - the wood column shrinks and swells at about the same pace as the wood walls. Cuts down on crakcs. Steel columns I use in the basment.
