QW-405.4 (b)

QW-405.4 (b)

QW-405.4 (b)

(OP)
Situation: I have a 9" long weld prep. On one end, the prep. is approx. 90 degrees, as it comes up against a 5.5" diameter. The other end has a .25 radius. I am PTA hardsurfacing this weld prep. I cannot angle the torch to weld in the 90 degree prep. The part is angled at approx. 30 degrees downward to put this 90 degree prep. in the flat position. One to three beads are welded in this configuration. The rest of the beads are are welded in a 1G position. Does the angling of piece on the 90 degree prep. end constitute a special position?

RE: QW-405.4 (b)

If you have Section IX handy, which you should have considering how many questions you have been asking, review QW-257.1, adding a position for hardfacing requires requalification.

RE: QW-405.4 (b)

ASME IX (QW-405.4 (b)) does not apply with HFO; newweldeng09 look at QW-405.4 (c) for your answer. If you have qualified a PQR in the 5G or 6G position where at least one vertical segment was completed in the uphill progression then "All Positions" are qualified by your PQR. As metengr has stated take a look at your ASME IX (Latest Edition) book. Hope this helps.
