Production Hardfaced Piece Used as a qualification

Production Hardfaced Piece Used as a qualification

Production Hardfaced Piece Used as a qualification

(OP)
Situation: I have a bar approx. 9" long that was hardfaced circumferentially across the entire length. Per QW-453, Note 8, the base metal shall be sectioned transversely to the direction of hardfacing. QW-462.5(b) for pipe is to be used to determine the specimen size. Is it required to examine all 9" of the transverse cut base metal or can smaller samples be cut from the center of the shaft to be mounted?

RE: Production Hardfaced Piece Used as a qualification

Only a transverse section is required to examine the hard facing overlay (HFO) exposed surfaces. So, what you propose can be done.

I am going to cut the shaft lengthwise, so I will have two sections, each 9" long. Then from each of the exposed faces, take one specimen from the center of the shaft each in the six o'clock position as specified in QW-462.5 (b) for flat rolled pipe. Is it correct that Section IX does not require the entire 9" length be evaluated?

RE: Production Hardfaced Piece Used as a qualification

Correct. Why? Because if you review ASME Section IX, Note 2 for QW-253 it states... the test base metal coupon shall have minimum dimensions ..... for pipe, the pipe length shall be 6" long and have a continous HFO applied. You met Note 2. Now move on to Notes 7 and 8 and 9.

Thanks for your help.
