Size of Filler Metals (QW-404) ASME IX
Size of Filler Metals (QW-404) ASME IX
(OP)
I am reviewing PQRs and WPSs for BPVC and am trying to understand how the range used for the size of filler metals (QW-404) is determined. For example, the electrode used for the PQR was 3/32" and the range given on the WPS is 3/32" to 5/32". The test coupon thickness is .432" with a maximum pass thickness recorded at .200".
Thank you
Thank you

On the PQR there is only one filler metal size listed, 3/32", in QW-404 for layer one with a weld metal thickness of .125"; layers two and three do not list a filler metal size but a weld metal thickness of .307" is recorded under layer two. The current recorded on the PQR is recorded as (1) 70 (2) 130.
On the WPS under QW-404 the size of filler metals is listed as "3/32 thru 5/32" and under QW-409 there are three seperate electrode diameters listed: 3/32", 1/8" and 5/32" with their respective amperage ranges.
I do not understand why there is only one diameter listed on the PQR but three on the WPS. If the 3/32" was the only diameter used for the PQR, why is 1/8" and 5/32" also listed on the WPS? Am I looking at an incomplete PQR?
I have attached the WPS and PQR for reference. There are other mistakes on them, I did not write them, just trying to understand them.
Thank you again

Please do not take this comment harshly but how do you review something you do not understand yourself ?
See if you can get a copy of the CASTI Guidebook to ASME Section IX Welding Qualifications - very informative guidebook that will help you immensely,

I would advise taking a course on ASME IX; provided through the ASME or Code West as a starter.
