Tubing temper

Tubing temper

Tubing temper

Is there such a thing as 1/8 hard austenitic stainless steel tubing? If so, what does it indicate in terms of hardness, as well as tensile and yield strength?

RE: Tubing temper

There is no current tube spec that calls out such properties. The 1/8, 1/4 hard and so on from the sheet specs do not directly apply to tubing.
Yes you can get cold drawn as drawn tubing in virtually all SS grades.
Different mills will call out different tensile properties, usually min only.
Unless you have a tensile that you want.
We do a lot of this at Plymouth Tube, Trent mill.

RE: Tubing temper

Heavy wall stainless steel tubing in the cold drawn condition is used with cone and thread fittings for very high pressure services. That's about the only time we encounter it.

Thanks all. I'm not sure the designations 1/8, 1/4 hard, etc, have any defined meaning, even though I see it used on several tubing suppliers'(not mills) sites. Perhaps I'll question them.

RE: Tubing temper

All aerospace hydraulic tube is CDAD (either 21-6-9 or Ti 3-2.5), and hundreds of mechanical applications such as pneumatic cylinders, submersible pump housing, and many more.
