All,

I am trying to select a solenoid valve for a refrigeration system. I have not designed the system however know its perameters. I need a valve for the following specifications.

Fluid R134a
Max pressure across valve 17 Bar
Electrical supply 12v DC
Max working pressure 35 Bar

I understand these things however what I do not understand is the specification of valve capacity in tons. This data is listed for the valves I am looking at for different temperatures.

What does this ton value refer to, is it thermal energy and if so how is this relevant to the valve selection. If not what is it and how do I calculate it?

Among other things a "ton" is a unit of heat energy. It's the energy that must be removed to change 1 ton (2,000 pounds) of water at 32 degrees F to ice at 32 degrees in and hour.,

12,000 BTU/hr or about 3.5 kW.

It's relevant to valve selection because capacity is related to refrigerant mass flow.
