Nozzle reinforcement deisgn question

Nozzle reinforcement deisgn question

(OP)
Hello:

Having a question about nozzle reinforcement design. It is a 4" NPS coil installed inside one pressure vessel . The coil nozzle penetration through the vessel. The vessel and internal coil are designed in accordance with ASME VIII DIv 1. Coil internal design pressure is 200% higher than design pressure of the vessel. My question is when we do nozzle reinforcement design for coil nozzle on the shell, the trn - required thickness of nozzle wall is based on pressure vessel design pressure or coil internal design pressure. Please advise. Thanks

RE: Nozzle reinforcement deisgn question

Material required to retain pressure cannot be considered as available reinforcement.

Regards,

Mike

RE: Nozzle reinforcement deisgn question

You would have to make an adjustment to use the coil pressure for this instance.

RE: Nozzle reinforcement deisgn question

The worst case is the coil design pressure, hence you have to design it for internal coil pressure and check for external pressure, as the vessel internal pressure.

RE: Nozzle reinforcement deisgn question

The required area due to removal of material(vessel portion) shall be calculated based of the thickness required due to design pressure of vessel. The available area for the nozzle pipe shall be considered based on the consideration of coil design pressure. Incase RF design is based on MAWP then instead of Design pressure the MAWP shall be considered for respective components. If you are going to specify the MAWP for Pressure vessel and the internal coil on the name plate separately then applicable MAWP shall be considered for required area of vessel and nozzle neck thickness. Otherwise single MAWP pressure is going to stamp on nameplate then the same MAWP shall be used for area of vessel portion as well as nozzle neck. If in the software where it is not possible to consider separate presure for both components, which you are using presently, then you may have to do manual or excel spreadsheet calculation for this special case. I wish the now matter is clearer to you. Good luck.
