ASME IX impact testing question

ASME IX impact testing question

ASME IX impact testing question

(OP)
A very simple one, I hope. If the base metal to be welded has an impact testing requirement (in this case A333 Gr. 6) then does the weldment automatically have an impact testing requirement, and therefore QW403.6 automatically apply.

From some rapid research I can see that QW 253 and 256 apply (it is a two process weld. SMAW and GTAW) and hence, where impact testing is required, QW403.6 is applicable.

A supplier has submitted a WPS and PQR for A333 Gr. 6 with a minimum qualified thickness of 1.5mm, but using a 7.1mm test coupon, and I believe they have made a mistake, even though the WPS and PQR have been stamped by their approving authority.

This is my first foray into welding qualifications and I'm finding the document somewhat heavy going.

I'd appreciate any input.

RE: ASME IX impact testing question

The procedure is not qualified to weld pipe in systems subject to impact testing either per ASME IX or ASME B31.3. It is qualified to weld pipe in systems, which are not subject to impact testing down to 1/16".

Many thanks Stan.

As a supplementary question, if the material qualified has an impact testing requirement, does the weld also have an impact test requirement? If so, then as the qualification has been carried out on A333 Gr. 6, then surely there should have been an impact testing requirement for the qualification, and so QW403.6 should have been taken in to account, and so the qualification is invalid?

RE: ASME IX impact testing question

No. The Design Construction Code dictates the need for weld procedure impact testing - not the material specification (excepting when repairs to the base material are permitted by the Purchasr to be made by welding).

RE: ASME IX impact testing question

stanweld is correct; this is a very big mistake people make quite regularly. Your design code dictates this requirement; such as if you are designing to ASME VIII-1 then UCS-66 would be your guide with impact testing being performed in accordance with UG-84.
