Control area for flammable liquids

Control area for flammable liquids

Control area for flammable liquids

(OP)
If a control area is built to store flammable liquids because they have exceeded the allowable quantities in their main production area, does the fire sprinkler system in this new control area need to be specially designed to handle the flammable liquids? IE, the new control area has an ord, group 2 design (small pipe and heads). Is this sufficient, if other aspects of the control area are in place such as 1 hour walls?

RE: Control area for flammable liquids

Generally I would say no, but it's dependent on the liquid's packaging, height of storage, miscibility, or if the liquid is stored under pressure. If your dealing with plastic or glass packaging, an OH-Grp 2 system, it may not be capable of handling a reasonably sized pool fire. If you're dealing with a water miscible liquid such as alcohol, an OH-Grp 2 density may work, depending on ceiling heights.

Based on the number of variables I've thrown out, you may want the permit applicant to seek a Technical Report and Opinion under IFC Section 104.7.2. Internet forums can't always solve the issue of the day.
