Replacing Bridge (under Canadian Code - CAN-CSA S6-06)

Replacing Bridge (under Canadian Code - CAN-CSA S6-06)

Replacing Bridge (under Canadian Code - CAN-CSA S6-06)

(OP)
Hello,

I have to replace a 50 year-old bridge. Only the superstructure will be replace (not abutments). Since this is a new bridge I have to use the current code (CAN-CSA S6-06; this is in Ontario, Canada) which requires the bridge to be designed for a CL-625-ONT, which is over three times higher than the load original used for the old bridge. I most likely have the risk that the abutments will not take the new load. Does anyone one if there is any provision that allows for design a new bridge based on the fact that the abutments do not need replacement an therefore they will call for the critical bridge load?

RE: Replacing Bridge (under Canadian Code - CAN-CSA S6-06)

Can you use Part 11 of the Ontario Building Code? or is it excluded for bridges?

With new steel, you'll have new bearing pads that may allow to spread of the loads on the existing abutments, otherwise, abutments may have to be beefed up(which I have not seen done in 15 years of bridge construction in Ct.) or replaced which I have seen done when replacing old bridges.

Thank you guys, under clause 3.8.3.1 of CSA S6-06, I am allowed to lower the load based on traffic conditions. I will design using the old load given that the traffic will not change (this is certified by tyhe owner of the bridge); so I am still good with the abutments.
