Wave-Linked body VS Promote body

Wave-Linked body VS Promote body

Wave-Linked body VS Promote body

(OP)
Is there any benefit to converting an existing model that has been promoted to making it a wave linked body? If so what are they?
We have hundreds of old models using the promote body command and when we convert them to a linked body, we lose some drafting dimension associativity. This can be time consuming and we would like to know if there are any issues with leaving the promote body as is.

RE: Wave-Linked body VS Promote body

I think the link that I posted is a bit old.
There have been changes, and there should be newer postings out there.

RE: Wave-Linked body VS Promote body

So is it worth coverting your promotions on existing models ? . . . probably not.

RE: Wave-Linked body VS Promote body

There are differences in the way the 2 functions work. Depending on what you want to do should drive the choice of wave-linked or promoted bodies.

Losing associative dimensions does not surprise me at all when you convert as the 'entity' that the dimension is associated to has been replaced by a different 'entity'.

RE: Wave-Linked body VS Promote body

Promotions are similar to WAVE linked bodies, except they have the added feature of hiding the source part within an assembly. That is, the base part remains correctly structured in the Assembly Navigator, but only the promoted body is visible in the assembly. As such, they are particularly useful when it is necessary to add assembly level features such as machining after parts have been put together. Non-master data such as drafting and CAM will also update to promoted parts whereas they will not update to WAVE linked parts.

The use of promotions, however, should be limited to these special cases as promoted bodies cannot be re-parented nor relinked. Promotions are also not visible unless their base part is loaded and visible as well. They can, however, be converted to WAVE links at any time to avoid these limitations.

For example, if a cut-to-length extrusion must be assembled before machining slot and cross holes (for example, tolerancing reasons), using a promotion is appropriate. This is especially true if dimensions had been added at some higher level to the raw extrusion, and they need to update to the new machined version. Machined weldments might benefit by using promotions as well.
