QW-202.2 (f)

QW-202.2 (f)

QW-202.2 (f)

(OP)
Situation: I have a PTA hardfaced WPS that was qualified to be applied to single layer welds only in production. I have a multi-layer production weld, so I re-qualified welding multiple layers, but my amperage and travel speed were slightly outside of the original range qualified. Do I need to perform the qualification over using the original amperage and travel speed qualified?

RE: QW-202.2 (f)

If you have qualified a multi-layer hardfacing using parameters outside of the original PQR for a single layer this is acceptable because a new WPS applicable to the multi-layer hardfacing could be generated. Have you reviewed Section IX regarding the change in essential variables for amps and travel speed? You are allowed less than 10% change in amperage and less than 15% change in travel speed without requalification, respectively.

I have reviewed Section IX regarding these variables. The multi-layer qualification amperage and travel speed was qualified outside the range allowed by the single-layer qualification. If the single-layer welding procedure was used for multi-layer production welds, I am allowed to re-qualify per QW-251.2 and Introduction (Procedure Qualification). Is this correct? The variables for the single-layer weld qual. would be used, except it would be qualified by welding multiple layers.

RE: QW-202.2 (f)

If you have a separate PQR related to the above (multi-layer), yes, you can write another WPS that is for the multi-layer production welds or combine into one WPS that has the two supporting PQR's.

RE: QW-202.2 (f)

(OP)
If a separate PQR does not exist, I can re-qualify and establish a new PQR based on QW-251.2 and Introduction (Procedure Qualification). Using this PQR, I can then write a new WPS.

RE: QW-202.2 (f)

Yup.
