yellow zinc plated anchor bolts?

yellow zinc plated anchor bolts?

(OP)
Would it be deemed acceptable to use a yellow zinc coated J429 grade 8 hex bolt embeded in concrete in place of L bent bolts.

From what I can find the hex head anchors provide greater strength.

They surpass the requirements of F1554 grade 36 correct?

Will the yellow zinc corrode rapidly embeded in the concrete? I intend to paint the exposed portion (after tightening) for corrosion protection.

The application is a metal building. The column anchors are as such inside and not subject to salt etc.

RE: yellow zinc plated anchor bolts?

Avoid the yellow stuff... it's typically a hexavalent chromate passivation... and carcenogenic. There are other less harmfull passivation processes.

RE: yellow zinc plated anchor bolts?

I don't think you would like the required embedment depth to yield the anchor bolt before concrete breakout. ACI 318-08 D.3.3.4 requires that the anchor yielding govern the embedment and head details. This is why most are hesitant to use high strength bolts for anchorage.

Thanks for the replies. That makes alot of sense fegenbush. This is not my area of expertise. I am errecting a personal metal building. My plans call for a 3/4 anchor f1554 grade 36 or better. 3/4 anchors seem hard to find but I have 3/4 hex bolt readily available in various lengths up to 8.5".

Grainger has 3/4 but they list a lower tensile strength than their 3/8 and give no specifics to metal grade.

Are 3/4 bent anchors that rare that no one stocks?
Are wedge bolts , Link
or Link wedge anchors acceptable for this kind of application.( Steel I-beam building colunm anchors)

I was mainly concerned with the anchors holding power. However, now I see that the regulations are protecting the foundation also.

RE: yellow zinc plated anchor bolts?

Not that I endorse this (or any) particular supplier, but 3/4" A36 bent anchor bolts are available from McMaster-Carr as part number 91587A440. Other lengths are available on there as well. I find that local concrete contractors are a good source for these items as well.

RE: yellow zinc plated anchor bolts?

I can't remember the last time I used an "L" bent anchor rod in lieu of a nutted or headed anchor bolt. They do not perform very well under high loads. The smooth shank and bend do not develop much strength before failure of the rod or loss of bond to the concrete. Headed or nutted anchors with plate washers provide excellent pullout strength.

Since these may be subject to corrosion, use either stainless or hot dip galvanized. You can get all-thread of either material from Hilti. Most liekly, a local contractor supplier or pre-engineered metal building company will have the galvanized anchor rods.
