Using a ASME section VIII vertical vessel as a horizontal vessel (R Stamp)

Using a ASME section VIII vertical vessel as a horizontal vessel (R Stamp)

(OP)
Hello,

My company recently received their R stamp certification, and we were wondering if by changing an originally vertical vessel into a horizontal one (because we want to utilize it in a different process), would that be considered a repair or an alteration? We will also have to weld new saddles, but the nozzles we are adding are going to be the same size as existing.

Thank you,

Adam

RE: Using a ASME section VIII vertical vessel as a horizontal vessel (R Stamp)

Changing the orientation is not an alteration or repair, but requires an appropriate assessment based on API 579. It might require change in the rating of the vessel and accordingly the change of the nameplate. An alteration or repair means physical modification of the metallic structure, based on the code requirements. Welding saddles and nozzles is an alteration and has to be in accordance with relevant code requirements, including also an assessment per API 579.

I am not sure I have to follow API 579, I am positive I have to follow ASME Section VIII and the National Board NBIC since I am dealing with a pressure vessel. If changing the orientation will require changing the rating of the vessel, than in that case I think I have do an alteration and therefore run all the calculations again.

The Section VIII is used for the design of new equipment, but the existing equipment might require assessment to establish the fitness for the new service. Obviously, the basic calculations have to comply with ASME VIII and also with NBIC. You will need to run the calcs again, for the new service and the new orientation, plus new nozzle loads, etc. Only then you can do the workshop alterations, as designed.
