hello to all my friends pls. help me how do i model rib slab and solid slab in etabs? membrane? shell or plate? im a noob when it comes to structural concerns.. i need to learn but i have a hard time for this. my only mentor for now is eng-tips.com and you all guys. ponder

RE: slam model in etabs

Ribbed slab can be modeled indirectly by using an equivalent solid slab with the corresponding stiffness modifiers.
Alternatively, you can model each part of the slab as area elements with the real thickness, which will apparently make your model more complex.
Membranes can be used directly, as you can choose this type from the Define->Area Sections.

RE: slam model in etabs

First of all Etabs cannot design any slab. you can only model the slab to analyse it and transfer the load to the frame( beams and columns) and from there to the foundations. So that you can analyse and design your frame in order to suport that slab in addition to any other load, including seismic and wid loads, you may assign to the structure. Then you can transfer the slab from Etabs to safe to design it. So to model the slab you must model your frame first. Then go to define menue/define slab section/ then enter the thicness of the slab. Normally you can model your solid slab as a shell element because it works for all. Then you can draw your slab on the frame that you should have already created. you can find vedeo tutorial in this link that might help http://www.csiberkeley.com/etabs/watch-and-learn#p.... Finally be carful in using these computer softwares; because any mistake in the input or a wrong initial assuption will lead to very different and unexpected results. So, you must have the necessary knowledge to verify the results.
wish you all the best
