SAFE + SPColumn Design

SAFE + SPColumn Design

SAFE + SPColumn Design

(OP)
Hi guys,

Just looking for a little bit of advice. I'm wondering am I doing this correctly.

Let's just say I have a few typical floors, so given the columnn sizes etc and floor-to-floor heights are the same, the moments in the columns will be the same top and bottom right.

In SAFE, M2 is green and M3 is blue right? Also, the moments that SAFE gives out for columns are positive and negative. If the signs are the same for column above and below then that means double curvature right, and if the signs are different then that means single curvature correct?

Finally, why is it that the moments all cannot be entered positively into SPColumn - I know this is wrong, just want to know why - I assume because it gives the wrond moment distribution or something?

Anyway, attached is a word file documenting my design process - would really appreciate any feedback.

Can anyone help me out?

Anyone at all?

RE: SAFE + SPColumn Design

When you are analyzing concrete columns using SPColumn you are analyzing the column for that story. So from SAFE you are going to be getting moment above and moment below when the signs are different. Analyzing the column above and below based on these moments. So for a condition where you have the same sign would mean your column is receiving some sort of point load. Maybe from a mode shape or something. Not sure you exact conditions.

Contact CSI regarding SAFE. They are not the fastest at responding unless you subscribe to a maintenance program, but they do respond.

I have never had a problem with the sign of moments in SPcolumn, and for what SPColumn is doing so long as the shape is symmetric the sign on the moment doesn't matter.
